Visual Composition

Above is the full size view of my visual composition.

This composition was created in Adobe Photoshop and is a composite of three different images. I used the lasso selection tool to create a very basic selection around my subject (Ash), and then refined the selection in the mask mode, using my Graphics tablet and the brush tool. I then applied the mask to the layer, and resized it to be more in proportion with the image of the Bicentennial Conservatory that I had taken on my Canon PowerShot Pro1 (8Mp) Digital SLR, during summer. Unfortunately the composition didn't work very well because the direct sunlight on the original picture of my subject conflicted with the shade of the conservatory.
I then used a masked levels layer to do some basic levels/colour correction on the picture of Ash waving, which helped integrate him the image into the scene better. After that I added a shadow layer as Ash looked too out of place in the scene. I created a new layer, and filled the previous outline selection of my subject with black. I then resized and distorted the layer, and applied a 2pixel Gaussian blur. I was still not happy with the results, so I replaced the background with something more interesting. After importing an image of the moon I had taken previously, I then created a mask layer for the Bicentennial Conservatory to remove both the sky and trees replacing it with the night sky. By positioning the moon to the left I could make the lighting on the subject more plausible, however the light was now coming from such an extreme angle that I had to discard my old shadow layer and hand paint the shadow in.

All original images and artwork was taken by me. The text layer comes from the song Point Of View, by DB Boulevard.

I hope you like my composition. Thank you very much for viewing.

I have also created an animated Gif showing the various layers and stages used in my visual composition (112Kb 360*288).
